Case 2: Shearwater Adventures Ltd.
Shearwater Adventures is a company specialized in organizing outdoor adventures and tours in Africa. They have their offices in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe in the southern part of the continent. The analysis of the company will be mainly focused in managerial strategies made by Allen Roberts, CEO of the enterprise.
As a brief background, Allen Roberts started making videos of rafting trips and selling the copies to participants as a way to make some money while being in college with mike Davis. After Davis’s depart, the manager of “Shearwater” named Roberts as CEO of the company with a 25% stake of ownership. Their aim is to be the most well-known tour agency in Africa in a short period of time. To accomplish this, the company invested in marketing and focused some of their resources to attract young customers at the time extreme sports and other type of extreme activities started to gain a major interest to this niche of the market. This decision was made because the company customers ranged 46-50 years old. They started to see the option if starting operations in the USA would be a good idea, but permit costs and overhead would be a major risk they would not be willing to take at the time so they decided to stay in Africa. After that, they associated with hotels and other tourism agencies in order to attract more demand as people were looking to Zimbabwe as a way to spend their vacations in a different but exciting way.
Two concerns of the company were: it was not expensive for a company to add an adventure to its lineup and also there was talent in the area that could either devise a new adventure or copy their offerings. One solution to there issue is to hire those people that may have success by copying their activities in order to take out some competition and offering them a stable job with an opportunity to grow. Another path may be to offer more promotions or discounts to their first customers to make them stay and hire them again in the future.
