Environmental issues in Chile
Luis Padilla
Chile has experienced a period of strong economic growth. As growth has proceeded at a rapid pace, the health and productivity costs of environmental degradation have become apparent. In 2001, the journal Science ranked Santiago as the Americas’ second most polluted city after Mexico City; in a more recent survey it came in third in the world, after Beijing and New Delhi. Chile is facing the effects of global warming too, DGA studies says that Andean glaciers have melted as much as 50% since 1970. For a country whose borders hold 80% of the continent’s ice, this could mean serious problems for Chile’s future. This report aims is to discuss the most important environmental problems in Chile and analyze possible solutions to help and save the world and national environment.
Air pollution in Santiago, the country's capital, is the most obvious environmental problem of the nation. Santiago experiences very high levels of air pollution, often exceeding guidelines suggested by the World Health Organization.
Besides, Chile has 24,133 glaciers, and they are disappearing piece by piece, The most important problem associated with receding glaciers is the nation’s loss of its most important source of fresh water.
Encourage people to use more and more public modes of transportation, try to make use of car pooling and emphasize on clean energy resources is a good way to reduce air pollution. Also, understand our own personal carbon footprint, the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle, and create more policies to protect the glaciers can help even more than we think.
In summary, air pollution and the melt of glaciers are the biggest environmental problems in Chile, affecting the people’s health and the water disponibility. But there are many solutions, can be a difference creating more policies, teaching about recycling, using less cars and more renewable energy. Then, Chile could get a better environmental condition and help the world environmental condition too.
