Presentation
The present proyect will be realise in Junquillal Beach, located in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste.
As first part is observed the place and the settlers and their life styles , also give descriptions of the impact that has had the touristic development in the zone.
Next part is talk about a very important conservation proyect that has the zone, “The Sea Turtles Proyect Conservation”, this proyect counts with the support of international organizations as WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature ).
Finally we will speak about the achievements of this conservation project in the zone and their settlers.
First Part
“Origin of the Junquillal`s name.”
According with the history of the zone, this beach was named like that, due to a plant called “juncos” that it grows near by the beach. The seeds of this plant are in into a extended rind, known in the area as “vainas”.
“A little bit of Junquillal`s History”
The first settler in the place was Anacleto Rodríguez, known like “Don Cleto”. Anacleto was born in Paraíso in 1911, and at the age of 17 he arrived at Junquillal. He told that before the life was “free”, for example; the respect by the other people's properties existed.
People used to cultivate, rice, beans, corn,cacao; also they raised cattle:cows, oxen, horses, and other like: hens and pigs.
Moreover he told that before they hunted animals like: tepezcuintles, cusucos, deers, and saínos (wild pig).
In addition, settlers produced salt for cook.
In those times the unique existing means of transport were the horses and the oxcarts. The first in arriving was a black car of Luis Brenes that came from Santa Cruz in 1928.
In 1970 began the economic development , the drinking water arrived, in 1972 the electricity arrived and began the construction of Antumalal`s Hotel. The tourism take place since 1978.
On 2002 Junquillal was galardonate with the Blue Ecologic Flag.
Observations:
• Flora and Fauna
In the zone there exist many variety of trees like: palmeras, mangles, almendros, malinche, madero negro, saíno, jicaros, matapalo, jocotes, and other no native species like laurel de la india and bambu trees.
Into the fauna there are many variety of birds as: pecho amarillo, peericos, hurracas, chocholpias, and other animals like: racoons, congos, squirrels, turtles, garrobos , iguanas, crabs and hermit crabs.
• Settlers , costums and local traditions
The Junquillal`s beach population is around 170 people between children and adults, compound of national and foreign people. Into the foreign people we have: americans, german, peruvian, swiss, venezuelan and nicaragüenses.
We can observated a diference between national and foreign constructions. The “ticos” houses are humble; are made of wood or cement, with small gardens, and the foreign people houses are, very big with swim pool, big garden, acconditioner air and other commodities.
The people of Junquillal have some traditions in the community such as: make a “Turtle Festival” with the purpose of colect funds to realice other proyects that aid with the development and the nature conservation in the community. And other tradition is realice a “Christmas Parade” with the objective of have a good time and draw an smile on children faces. This parade is organizate with the Paraíso`s community.
• Tourism and economic activities.
The zone began the development with creations of hotels and condominiums.
Actually Junquillal counts with many hotels like: Villa Serena, Hibiscus, Tatanka, Guacamaya, Castillo Divertido, and Iguanazul.
Also there are some condominiums such as: Las Ventanas, Las Brisas, Villa Roberta and Tierra Pacífica.
There exists a Bar & Restarant like: Rudy`s, and Milo Congo.
Moreover you can find “Los Malinches” Camping, horse back riding tours, also counts with a public park in front of the beach,counts with a soccer field,and others like a sawmill, medical doctor's office, veterinary doctor's office and a mechanical factory
Also the community counts with one teacher in the school, This person is the teacher and the principal, at the same time.
The majority of the Junquillal`s settlers realice workings within the area, as much in hotels, condominiums, etc, and bordering zones. Generally people carry out workings like : cleaning and kitchen workings and gardering Other people count on own business or they are dedicate on sale ocassional of products like:tamales, arroz de maiz, pan casero, empanadas rosquillas and tanelas; and other, to obtain some extra money.
Second Part
In this section, we are going to talk about the sea turtles project conservation. ,How the project is developed ?, What are the objectives of this project?,What species of sea turtles are protected? , What is a turtle hatchery? And other important information about this interestiing project.
How the project begins?
This project began to take form in the year 2005, into the hands of the Organization the International WWF, that proposed the young people to develop a communitarian project to them of Conservation of Baulas in Junquillal, a beach that is not protected area on the part of the Ministry of Atmosphere, Energy and Telecommunications of Costa Rica (MINAET).
This project of conservation based on the community, led by the Dr. Gabriel Francia, is pioneering in the work of mitigation and adaptation to the impact of the climatic change for the marine turtles, the sites of nesting and the local population. This project no longer belongs to WWF but it follows in front of independent form.
This project of conservation with base in the communal effort is concentrated in the social mitigation of the egg sacking and in the mitigation of the climatic change that hits the nesting site.
The final intention is that the community values more to the alive turtles that died turtles and the benefits of the measures to preserve" , it says Carlos Drews, coordinator of the Program of Marine Species of the WWF for Latin America and the Caribbean. Junquillal beach in the Pacific of Costa Rica was discovered recently like one of the most important sites in the country for nesting of the Baula turtle.
