Summer Schools at Finnish higher education institutions

Many Finnish higher education institutions organise summer schools in various disciplines and academic levels. These summer schools may be offered for example as short, intensive academic events concentrating on one particular branch of scientific endeavour, or they may consist of a wider selection of individual courses over the summer term (from mid-May until mid-August approximately). At some universities, the themes of the annual summer school may vary from one year to another.

You can find a list of the summer schools further below on this page.

For whom?

Summer schools offered by the Finnish higher education institutions are usually targeted for students and researchers already enrolled in higher education - that is, you usually need to be registered as a university-level student or researcher in your home country to apply.

NB: If you are not currently a student, you may perhaps find some options at the Finnish Summer Universities' course options - note that summer university is not exactly the same thing as a summer school; you do not need to be enrolled in higher education in order to apply to summer universities' courses. Please contact the Association of Summer Universities in Finland for info on what is available at summer universities (various Finnish language courses on different starting levels, for example).

How to apply to Summer Schools?

If you are interested in the following summer schools, please follow the links below to the summer schools' own web pages - you'll find more information on the contents and application procedures as well as the necessary contact details on the summer schools' websites.

Scholarships and grants

Some summer schools may offer a limited number of grants or scholarships for participation purposes. You must contact the summer school organisers directly in order to find out whether such financial support is available, and if yes, what the requirements are, how and when you should apply, etc.

NB: CIMO scholarships are not unfortunately applicable to summer school participants.

Visa matters

Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Finland. Since the summer schools are short-term studies or academic events that do not as such lead to a degree, you cannot be granted a student residence permit - but you can apply for a short-term visa to Finland via the Finnish embassy in your home country. Please see section 'Visas' for more information.

What kind of summer school options are available?

Since there is no "umbrella organisation" that would coordinate all the various summer school options available in Finland, there exists no all-inclusive listing of all the possible options offered. However, we have gathered together links to a number of Finnish summer schools below.

Also, because some of the summer schools are largely "institution-specific" whilst others may be more "field-specific", we've grouped them into two separate categories. Please check out both the summer schools listed by location(institution, and those listed by field of expertise.

Please note that the list below is not necessarily an exhaustive one, but we will include new ones into the list whenever the higher education institutions inform us about possible additions. You may also contact the higher education institutions directly for information on the summer school options they offer.
