The Pros and Cons of Zoos
Those who support zoos say that zoos fulfill a variety of needs for society and the environment. The needs most frequently mentioned are research, preservation, education, and recreation. Education is perhaps the most defensible of the goals of zoos. That is to say that zoos do provide people with tha chance to see some of the many species that exist on the planet. The objective is that they will become educated and more sympathetic towards the problems of endangered species. If you have seen a panda , you will very probably be interested in supporting environmental projects to stop is extinction.
However, in reality, several of these arguments can be questioned. For example, it´s very hard to defend zoo owners´ claims that they are doing valuable research. Any studies they do are, in fact, very limited since the behavior of any species in captivity varies greatly from how it acts in its natural environment. Another argument in favor of zoos is that they have breeding programs to increase the numbers of endangered animals. But these only work if they are connected with programs to prepare the young animals for release into the wild, and this is very difficult for animals born in captivity.
Zoos designed strictly for human entertainment actually serve no positive purpose at all. This is because most people visit zoos simply for social reasons like family outings or to see friends. The well- being of the animals at the zoos is of secondary importance, and people do not even notice that sometimes they are living in uncomfortable and unnatural conditions. Many zoos are run simply as businesses for profit, whith makes them more like fun parks with live exhibits.
