Relation between Teachers - Students
The links between teachers and students appear to be central to the construction of "climate nutrition" in the classroom and instrumental to motivation in the students learning.
So, have you had a teacher in your learning process who has influenced you positively or negatively? The answer was given by more than a thousand of students who participated in a research by the Direccion General Estudiantil (DGE), from Pontificie Universidad Catolica de Chile oriented to know what characteristics of pedagogical relation established over academic experience have facilitated their learning. The research concluded in January of last year (2013), considered students' personal experiences, links between teacher and students and also the relationship between them and their learning.
Its development was led by the psychologist Gonzalo Gallardo and Pablo Reyes and it was comprise of two phases, one qualitative phase and one quantitative phase, in parallel.
First part involved 78 students from 2nd - 3rd- 4th - 5th year, students of architecture, biological science, education, engineering and psychology. Finally, they were distributing in 10 focus groups.
Second part of the research was based on a survey of over a thousand young people from the same university.
According to Gonzalo Gallardo: "we wanted students from different careers and different campuses, so as to reflect the variety of interest of the students. Young people value the same aspects, regardless of the career that they have been choose.
After the research, 89% of the students who participated in the research said they had had at least once in his career the experience of studying with a teacher who changed their lives; while 11% of them reported that they had experienced a negative experience with a teacher at least once during their careers.
Adolescence is a difficult time for the teacher and also for the student. At the same time, there are many changes in an adolescent both physical and psychologically. All of these problems are part of the search of their identity. Therefore, an adolescent can be influenced by parents, friends, teachers, or other. Nevertheless, what does teens want from their teachers? Do they seek a friend or an enemy? And as a teachers, what role we must take towards these questions?
The book, Responsible Classroom Discipline written by Vernon F. Jones and Louise Jones discuss how to create a learning environment approachable for children in the elementary schools.
“Student disruptions will occur frequently in classes that are poorly organized and managed where students are not provided with appropriate and interesting instructional tasks” (p. 101)
Definitely, we should draw a line between being a teacher and being a friend to our students. Those are different things and do not go together. We must start from the basis that we are not being friends or enemies and that is none of those things what they are looking for us. According to Teresa Gonzalez, a psychologist specializing in child and adolescent psychology:
“The teachers do not have to try maintaining a friendship with students similar to friendship that they have with their peers: what students want and ask is that you act as a teacher inside the classroom and outside the classroom”
Teenagers looking in a teacher someone in who their can trust, someone to check the limits and someone who says NO when it is no. Students do not look a friend to go out, for that they have their peers, their groups or friends in the neighborhood or in the school. Besides, friends are chosen by teenagers but they cannot choose their teachers. Friends are elected based on their tastes, on their hobbies and students have friends to have fun, to talk when they feel bad, or just to spend time with someone who is in the same situation and in the same age, someone who is living the same experiences and can share the same situations.
