Introduction to Matter
This section describes the kinds of properties used to describe matter. It also defines elements and contrasts compounds and mixtures.
Use Target Reading Skills
Write a definition of each Key Term in your own words.
matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space.
chemistry: The study of matter, particles and their alterations. substance: Matter with specific properties.
physical property: An external property of an object such as size, color, hardness etc.
chemical property: A property of matter that has to do with its internal composition.
element: A substance that cannot be broken down into more fundamental substance, the periodic table contains them all.
atom: Basic unit of an element.
chemical bond: An attraction between atoms molecule: A group of atoms bonded together
compound: A substance composed of two or more different atoms
chemical formula: A set of chemical symbols that shows a type of compound
mixture: A substance made by joinning other substances together
heterogeneous mixture: Mixture of substances that are not physically alike
