WHAT IS EPIDEMIOLOGY?

Epidemiologyisthe discipline orsciencethatstudiesthefrequency and distribution of diseasesor events and health phenomena in social groups and the factors that influence the occurrence and variation of this distribution, comes from the Greek terms, Epi = above, above, Demos = people and Logos = study, and means the study of what is about or that affects people. In its beginnings, the greatest interest of epidemiology was concentrated in infectious diseases. Today the panorama for the study of health and disease processes is universal.

Today we can consider Epidemiology as the science that investigates the health situation of any population, the causes and positive and negative factors that modify it, including the procedures, actions and plans that contribute to improve it. The growing complexity of health is characterized by the persistence of existing historical problems, by modifications of them and by the emergence of new health problems. The global nature of health is expressed through two fundamental dimensions: the health conditions of the populations and the social response to such conditions, structured through health systems.

Epidemiology as a science investigates the health situation of any population, the causes or positive and negative factors that modify it, including the procedures, actions and plans that contribute to improving it.

The definitions of the state and health needs of populations vary according to socioeconomic, political, environmental changes and advances in knowledge, which have been used to explain the transformation of the epidemiological profiles of countries. At the macro level of the health determinants model, the epidemiological profile is structured according to the various economic, social, political and cultural changes, while, in the epidemiological transition model, proposed by Omran and modified by various authors, the determinants Health focus more from the perspective of the disease.

The original proposal of the epidemiological transition model assumed a linear evolution of the epidemiological changes; Recent history has demonstrated their reversibility, their nonlinear nature and the coexistence of noncommunicable and communicable diseases. Although various traditional infectious diseases have been totally or partially controlled, their importance remains considerable in many geographic areas and populations of the world.
