THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH IN SCHOOL AND ITS FUTURE ADVANTAGE
Strengthening English from childhood and throughout basic education is a guarantee to have better opportunities in the future. That is why it is so important to learn English at school, but it is not the same to “take classes” as it is to really make it a life tool.
Most private educational institutions in Latin America use English as a second language and in several countries public schools have also integrated it into their curricula at a general level.
The European Study of Language Proficiency among English-speaking young people found that, even if they have taken the subject, 63% of students do not understand English by the end of secondary school and more than half cannot read or write it.
What are the advantages of having a good level of English at school?
It is common to hear people around us lament that they lost a job opportunity or to study abroad because "they do not have a good level of English". And then one wonders what those two, three or more hours a week were invested in, in which, in theory, these subjects were studied during the school years.
Institutions at all levels often think of the teaching of this language as a mere curricular requirement and do not have a broad awareness of the true importance of the English language, as well as the objectives that must be achieved for it to truly become a tool. of life.
A medium or advanced command of English can make all the difference in terms of a person's educational, employment and even social opportunities. Among the most important advantages are:
- Access to teaching plans around the world
Some truly bright and committed students hit the English barrier when it comes to broadening their horizons to study abroad for a BA, Masters or Diploma. Either in person or online.
Many times the problem is not the cost of these programs, since there are a large number of scholarships and supports, but that they are rejected because the subjects and materials are taught in English and the institution considers that they will not be able to "keep up" with his companions.
Similarly, thousands of renowned institutions around the world have free courses, diplomas and workshops that require the participant to be able to understand and participate in classes in English.
- Best Jobs
For many people, graduating from high school with the ability to hold meaningful conversations with an English speaker is the equivalent of landing a much better paying first job. Thus, English in young people becomes an asset to invest in a better university education.
English, by itself, is a key that allows almost immediate access to jobs in areas such as customer service, sales and tourism. However, it is when it is combined with a career with international projection that it allows access to managerial and executive positions in multinational companies.
The use of English is growing more and more because it is the only way that two countries with different languages can communicate fluently. For example, a meeting between the marketing team in Brazil and the marketing team in Mexico of an international company is much easier if all participants can communicate in English.
- Remote work opportunities
Globalization has caused employers around the world to start looking for global remote or freelance talent, especially in areas related to programming, technology and content creation. This trend clearly skyrocketed as a result of the pandemic that began in 2020.
Speaking English allows a person in Latin America to communicate with clients not only English-speaking, but also from Asian regions: the labor and industrial market that is currently in the greatest expansion. There are quite a few online remote work platforms that connect clients and specialists from all over the world, with the only condition that they can agree in English.
In this way, the job opportunities of those who are fluent in English are much greater than those of those who can only communicate in their mother tongue. In the sense of remote work, English is practically a guarantee of a better quality of life.
- Access to global information and entertainment
Much of the literature, film, music, arts, and entertainment in general is in English. In fact, the first translations and subtitles that are made of books, movies and series are almost always in English, and many times they are not translated into other languages.
In addition, there are thousands of computer programs and academic research articles that are only in this language. In fact, the famous abstract of any article must always come in its original language and in English, so that researchers from other parts of the world can find out what it is about and whether it is worth translating it.
English also makes life much easier for people who love to travel, as virtually all staff in the tourism industries speak it, regardless of their region of origin.
