The legacy of war
• In many ways WWI was a new war
• It involved the use of new advancing technologies
• Ushered the notion of war on a grand and global scale
• Left behind a landscape of death and destruction, which had never been seen before
• Both sides paid a high price of the war, in terms of human life
• About 8.5 million soldiers died as a result of the war
• Another 22 million were wounded
• The war led to the countless deaths of many civilians by the way of starvation, disease, and slaughter
• An entire generation of Europeans had been wiped out
• Economically, Europe was trained of its treasuries, a total cost estimated to be around $338 billion, a struggling amount for the time
• The last significant legacy that would later have repercussions once again in Europe, lay in its peace agreement
• The treaties to end WWI were decided over great debate and compromise
• The treaties sought to re-establish order, security, and peace in Europe, but mainly they promoted anger and resentment
