7 Wonders of the World
It was an initiative started in 2000 as a Millennium project to choose The Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments. The popularity poll was led by Canadian-Swiss Bernard Weber and organized by the New7Wonders Foundation based in Zurich, Switzerland. The winners were announced on July 7, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal. The New7Wonders Foundation claimed more than 100 million votes that were cast through the Internet or by telephone. The voting via Internet was limited to one vote for seven monuments per person; via telephone multiple voting was possible. The Giza Pyramid of Egypt 2589 BC, was the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World, it was granted with an honorary site.
And the winners are:
• Taj Mahal, is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage”. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar component of the Taj Mahal, it is actually an integrated complex of structures. The construction began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, employing thousands of artisans and craftsmen.
• Chichen Itza, was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya civilization. The archaeological site is located in the municipality of Tinum, in the Mexican state of Yucatán. The site exhibits a multitude of architectural styles, reminiscent of styles seen in central Mexico and of the Puuc and Chenes styles of the northern Maya lowlands. (500-1200 bC).
• Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world. A symbol of Brazilian Christianity, the statue has become an icon for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It was made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1922 and 1931.
• Colosseum or Coliseum is an elliptical amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of concrete and stone, it was the largest amphitheater of the Roman Empire, and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It is the largest amphitheater in the world. The Coliseum could hold, an estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, and was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era.
