  • What is a business model?
  • The business model outlines[a] the ways in which an enterprise creates market value.
  • The business model is the master plan that charts [b]the way in which a company can reach its goals. It streamlines[c] the process by which a company identifies its target market, defines it value in this market, and develop an offering that creates value for its target customers, its collaborators, and its stakeholders.
  • EXAMPLE: Falabella

Falabella is a multinational department store chain whose type of business model is retail. You will surely wonder why. But don’t worry, we will analyze the business models later

  • Types of business models
  • As I was saying, there are many types of business models. However, the most common are:
  • Franchise model: The franchise allows the franchisee [d]to license its resources, brand[e] intellectual property and rights to sell its products and services in exchange for royalty payment[f].

The franchisee is the company that acquires the franchise. The advantages of this business model is that it allows rapid growth, reduced risk, access to economies of scale, technology

For example: Mc Donald’s, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut

  • Direct sales business model: These products are sold to the end customer in a face-to-face conversation or in a small meeting. The seller receives a portion of each sale.

For example: Avon, Herbalife, Natura, Oriflame

  • E-commerce business model: It allows buyers and sellers to connect and transact using an online platform. E-commerce is often used to refer to sale of physical products online, but it can also describe any kind of commercial transaction that is facilitated through the internet

For example: Alibaba.com, OLX, Baby infanti store, Mercado libre, Linio, Riplay.com

  • Subscription business model: Customers pay a fixed amount every month or year for a specific service. It creates economies, retains customers and simplifies a lot of business processes making them easier in the long run[g].

For example: El comercio, Netflix, Movistar, Claro, Entel

  • Retail business model: A retailer purchases[h] products from a distributor or manufacturer and then sells those products to the public. Retailer allows customers to see what they are buying up close and they provide instant gratification, because the customer walks away with their purchases immediately.

For example: Tottus, Sodimac, Promart, Plazavea, Hiraoka

  • Manufacturing business model: A manufacturer takes raw materials [i]and creates a product, or assembles pre-made components into a final product.

For example: Nestle, Coca-Cola, Konfort, Good Year, Molitalia

  • The entrepreneurial mindset
  • The entrepreneurial mindset [j]is a way of thinking that enables people to identify opportunities, overcome challenges, be decisive and succeed in different settings, so it involves beliefs, assumptions[k] and knowledge.
  • Characteristics of the entrepreneurial mindset:
  • They passionately seek new opportunities: they stay alert, always looking for the chance to profit[l] from change and disruption in the way business is done
  • They pursue opportunities with enormous discipline: Most maintain some form of inventory, or register, of unexploited opportunities. They make investments[m] only if the competitive area is attractive and the opportunity is ripe[n].
  • They focus on execution: They execute- that is, they get on with instead of analyzing new ideas.
  • They engage[o] the energies of everyone in their domain: They work with people- both inside and outside the organization- in their pursuit[p] of an opportunity. They create and sustain networks[q] of relationships rather than doing it alone.

  • Difference between a businessman and an entrepreneur

Businessman

Entrepreneur

  • Individual who operates or starts a business with the same old business idea.
  • Chooses to do business that is high in demand or gives him maximum profits in return.
  • Individual who has an exclusive idea to initiate and establish a new venture [r]and bring a change to the world
  • Highly creative and innovative, takes a risk and endures[s] the unpredictability of business
  • Integral part of the operation, who builds and deploys[t] the other functions of the operations (e.g. labour[u], land, and capital).
  • The business started by entrepreneurs with a new concept for the first time is known as start up.
