LEADERSHIP: THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

When speaking of intelligence generally thought or associated with the knowledge that we acquire throughout life in different institutions for this purpose; believe that intelligence is all practical and theoretical knowledge we learn about topics such as science, mathematics, languages, among other subjects that are the basis of our knowledge throughout childhood. Thus we see how society is aimed at promoting this intelligence as the most valuable source of growth, success and personal and professional development; however throughout history it has been noted as emotions move much, if not most human actions, both personally, and professionally. That is why, it has become an essential part of human life developing what today is known as emotional intelligence, this intelligence not only speaks of the ability of people to control their own emotions and feelings in a given situation, it also covers the importance of knowing recognize, respect and address the emotions of others, but not before having clarity of the capabilities and skills that each of us, to develop the individual in what we know as society. It’s for this, that then the importance of emotional intelligence in organizational world forming leaders are observed and that good management of emotions and recognition of themselves can lead to success in the business world, showing that such intelligence can lead people to achieve high levels of leadership through various components that formed as effective leaders and people.

As mentioned above, develop emotional intelligence has become an essential part of human beings and businesses. Today it is important to companies not only employees, but on the contrary, be effective leaders, they all have a high degree of what has come to be known as emotional intelligence (Goleman, 1998), and this intelligence can be seen and training at all levels of an organization. So, emotional intelligence is the sine qua non of leadership (Goleman, 1998), without these a person can have many intellectual and analytical skills, but this will not make that person a good leader, you need to develop other skills that allow you to bring your emotions to a higher level of maturity that will allow you to make decisions, manage people and manage resources more efficiently

Thus, it is important to recognize that there are five major components of emotional intelligence in the workplace; first of all, a good leader must be able to have self-awareness and this is defined as the ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others (Goleman, 1998), a person who is able to develop this component can recognize their feelings affect themselves, others and their work performance; in turn, these people are characterized by their self-confidence, making them more efficient and predisposed to develop tasks; are realistic self-assessment people, it´s mean that  recognize what their strengths and what are their weaknesses and work on it, so, a person who can recognize their own worth and what are good can contribute their knowledge and be the best at what he does; and finally these people have a self-deprecating sense of humor, which makes them more open to any correction made to them and this allows them to be open to learn and improve their errors always with a good attitude.
