Fire Emergency Procedures for Building Occupants
The authority to move persons from offices, suites, and entire floors in case of a fire emergency rests primarily with Campus Public Safety. In a fire situation, evacuation begins immediately - generally before the arrival of the Fire Department. Once the Fire Department arrives on the scene, their authority is absolute, all subsequent decisions regarding evacuation rest with them.
• Always assume an alarm is real.
• Read and learn the Emergency Procedures Manual (this document), and keep it accessible.
• Know at least two safe exit routes before an emergency. The closest exit may not be the safest.
• Take time to familiarize yourself with the stairwells before an emergency. Exit routes are marked on maps posted on each floor by the starewell or elevator
If You Are the One to Discover Fire or Smoke
Notify the Fire Department (911) and Campus Public Safety (725-4404). Be prepared to give the building name and the general area of the fire to both the Fire Department and Campus Public Safety. Do not assume that someone else has reported the emergency.
• DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIGHT A FIRE, YOU ARE EXPECTED ACTIVATE THE BUILDING FIRE ALARM AND EVACUATE THE BUILDING
• NEVER LET A FIRE COME BETWEEN YOURSELF AND A MEANS OF ESCAPE
• Alert and remove people in immediate danger.
• Begin evacuation procedures - DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS. In case of a fire, the smoke detectors are activated and all elevators will return to the Lobby.
• Listen for, and follow directions of Campus Public Safety officers, Facilities Maintenance staff or Fire Department.
• Stay calm - walk to the nearest exit.
• Once in the stairwells, stay to the right holding the handrail, allow others to enter the stairwell, and keep moving. Watch for and assist physically challenged individuals who might be in the stairwell.
• If caught in smoke, take short breaths, and breathe through your nose while reaching an exit stairwell. Crawl to the exit if necessary; the air closest to the floor will be more breathable.
• Proceed to the predesignated assembly area as established
