V.-Read 7 Steps Mankind Can Take to Save the Environment
By Chelsea Hedquist
The Earth is so far the only known spot in the universe that is hospitable to the human race. Therefore, preserving a healthy environment is not just a nice ideal, it is imperative.
Mankind has the power to be either the hero or the villain in the quest to save the Earth, but certainly playing the hero will produce better results. These are 7 steps to take when it comes to saving the environment.

Cut Energy Consumption
The human race has grown to nearly 7 billion. Our insatiable consumption of energy plays a major role in destroying the environment. One of the most important steps we can take to save the environment is to cut down on this consumption. This may translate into simple actions:
- Buy and use fluorescent light bulbs
- Insulate our homes so they heat and cool more efficiently
- Turn off lights and other electronic equipment when we leave a room
- Use cold water when possible, instead of hot or warm
- Turn the thermostat up or down (depending on the season) when we're not at home
- Turn the hot water thermostat down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius)
- Wash only full loads of laundry and dishes in the machines
There are more ways to cut your personal energy consumption. While these actions may seem insignificant on an individual level, they have considerable impact when millions of people make the same smart decisions.
Produce and Use Sustainable Energy
Mankind will continue to use energy inevitably, even if we all make a combined effort to cut down on our consumption. Another important step to take if we want to save the environment is to find alternative ways to produce and use sustainable, clean energy.
Solar panels or wind farms are two forms of "green" energy that can help reduce energy consumption. In addition to making decisions about using already existing sources of alternative energy, it's crucial to promote and invest in research that will help connect other sources of sustainable energy.
The world will always have a high demand for energy, regardless of how we change our personal habits, so we need to find ways to make sure that we're using clean and renewable sources of energy to meet that great demand.
Sustainable energy sources such as wind can provide the energy we need without polluting our environment.
Preserve Water
We can't live without water, and anyone who has experienced a drought can confirm the value of water. The nature around us needs water just as much as we do, so we can't save the environment without saving our water supply. Conserving water starts with looking at it as a limited resource and consuming it with that in mind.
A good way to cut down on water use is by installing appliances, such as low-flush toilets and low-flow showerheads and faucets. These water-saving devices can reduce water consumption by more than 30 percent. Such solutions can translate into saving millions of gallons of water when even a small number of people implement them.
We can also make choices about how much water we use in our daily lives by, for example, taking shorter showers or not running the water while we're washing dishes. Choosing to conserve water can have a significant impact on the overall goal of saving the environment.
