As we live in a world that is constantly changing, evolving and seeking every time to discover and develop new things that helps humanity, It becomes necessary to us to know what is going on around us. One of the things that have had a really important impact in our world is what is called “Genetic engineering” but what is it? Genetic engineering is the manipulation or modification of an organism's genome such as animals and plants using biotechnology.
Genetic engineering is going to become a very mainstream part of our lives sooner or later because it involves so many advantages but also disadvantages. It´s a really complicated and controversial topic because as many people say, scientist are doing modifications that should not be allowed for reasons as it´s not healthy and that they are changing the natural course of the world, but there are also the people that support this idea because it can bring many discoveries that could help to improve people lives.
It might not be really easy saying which the right side of genetic engineering is but here are some of the most important advantages and disadvantages of it so we could do a better judgment of this topic.
Advantages:
Disease could be prevented by detecting people/plants/animals that are genetically prone to certain hereditary diseases, and preparing for the inevitable.
Animals and plants can be 'tailor made' to show desirable characteristics. Genes could also be manipulated in trees for example, to absorb more CO2 and reduce the threat of global warming.
Thanks to genetic engineering, the pharmaceutical products available today are far superior to their predecessors.
Genetic engineering has helped lower the overall usage of herbicide and pesticide, increasing the resistance of the plant to salinity, drought and viruses and also reducing the plant's need for a nitrogen fertilizer.
There are experiments where scientists are trying to create body parts which would be really important for people who need an organ or any other member.
As we read before genetic engineering could bring many advantages that would change life as we know it, but there is people who are against this kind of projects and here there are some of the reasons why they don´t support it.
Disadvantages:
Nature is a really complex issue, and scientist cannot start experimenting however they want without knowing the consequences and huge problems it could bring.
Genetic engineering borderlines on many moral issues, particularly involving religion, which questions whether man has the right to manipulate the laws and course of nature.
Genetically modifying anything is not safe because there isn't enough evidence out there to verify if the effects are safe or not and what the effects on the environment in the future can be.
Both sides of the coin have their
