Euthanasia should be legalized in Mexico

A controversial topic disputed currently by people of all ages, is the legalization of euthanasia. Euthanasia is the act of putting to death painlessly or allowing to die, as by withholding extreme medical measures, a person or animal suffering from an incurable, especially a painful, disease or condition. Although it involves some moral, religious, and politic conflicts in society, euthanasia should be legalized in Mexico for three important reasons.

The first main reason why society may support euthanasia is because every single person must be allowed to decide about the longevity in their life. Laws in Mexico state that is illegal to practice physician-assisted suicide because is consider a crime; but people who is terminally ill must be capable to use their rights when they can no longer live peacefully and in the right conditions. In March 2007, Inmaculada Echevarría, the Spanish woman who suffered from progressive muscular dystrophy, fulfilled her desire for a dignified death; her respirator was removed after years of struggle for his euthanasia. A few days before she received official approval to die. "I'm tired of living like this and depending on everyone, I want an injection that paralyzes my heart," she said then. "It's not fair to live like that, my life is loneliness, emptiness and choice, there is no way to keep me alive."

The second major reason to authorize euthanasia is because it stops suffering and adjudge the person to die in dignity. This can be testified by the first case of euthanasia that occurred in America Latina: At age 79, Colombian Ovidio González formally asked for euthanasia due to a cancer that caused him terrible pains and disfigured his face. Like Ovidio, there are other persons that cannot handle their pain anymore, we don´t know how they really feel, we cannot put ourselves in his shoes, because we do not know his true surroundings, his deepest thoughts and feelings, we are totally isolated from the situation even when we are part of his family, we will never fully understand his need to end his pain, because we have not felt it. People who have an incurable disease or condition are those who implore to legalize this action.

Nowadays, the only way of keeping alive a person who are in coma because of injury to their brain or that are terminally ill, and they cannot reverse their situation, is by artificial means, and this act involves high economic expenses. So the third and last reason to support euthanasia is that expenses would be reduced, euthanasia makes economic sense.

We are all aware that euthanasia is not a simple topic as we make it seem every time we speak, with a fluency that seems to play down, it is not easy to see a life ending, nor is it to see a life full of suffering. Euthanasia enables a person to end with its suffering, instead of continuing to live thanks to artificial equipment and expensive treatments that likewise will not save their lives or return them to their previous state, it only prolongs more their suffering and that of their family. Euthanasia should be legalized in Mexico, because it is more humane to allow a person with intractable suffering to be allowed to choose to end that suffering.
