Nutrition Assignment
1. What is nutrition? What is the difference between nutrition and diet?
“Nutrition is the process of nourishing or being nourished, especially the process by which a living organism assimilates food and uses it for growth and for replacement of tissues”
Nutrition refers to the nutrients that are part of the food and diet is the science that uses the knowledge of nutrition to provide a healthy nutrition.
2. Name the different nutrients. What are the energetic and non-energetic nutrients? How many calories give you one gram of lipids? How much gives you one gram of carbohydrates?
Calcium, Carbohydrates, Cholesterol, Fat , Fiber , Folic Acid, Incomplete Proteins, Iron Niacin, Protein, Riboflavin, Saturated Fats, Sodium, Thiamin, Unsaturated Fats,Vitamin A and Vitamin C.
The energetic nutrients are Carbohydrates, all type of Fats, all type of Proteins. The non- energetic nutrients are vitamins and minerals (Sodium, Iron, Calcium...)
One gram of fat gives 9 calories and one gram of carbohydrates gives 4 calories.
3. Describe and define the food pyramid and it ́s elements. Copy and paste an image of the food image here.

4. What are the ideal percentages of calories that you should consume of each nutrient?
• Fat: 20 - 35% of total calories (average 30%)
• Protein: 10 – 35% (average 15%)
• Carbohydrates: 45 – 65% (average 55%)
5. Pick a food item and look at its nutrition label. Explain if that product fulfills these percentages or not. Remember, the nutrition label only shows grams. In order to find the correct percentages you must convert grams to calories. Write down the name of the food item you have chosen and attach an image of the food label.
I chose a box of cereals. This product fulfills these because the percentage of the fat is less than the percentage of carbohydrates but higher than the percentage of the proteins.
6. If the chosen food item gives you energy in a balanced way, why wouldn’t it be enough eating only that product?
We souldn ́t eat only that product because it doesn ́t contain all necessary nutrients in optimal proportions for the proper functioning of the body. For example : Meat is rich in protein, but it doesn ́t have the same amount of fiber or vitamins of an apple or salad.
7. Give five examples of junk food.
Hamburguers, hot dogs, pizza, chips and ice cream.
