The book is called “A Girl Named Disaster” and its author is Nancy Farmer. This book is a non-fiction book. Nancy Farmer had 1 brother and 1 sister. Her brother’s name was Lee. He studied science and was very intelligent. Her sister’s name was Mary. She had written three Newbery Honor Books. Those books are The Ear the Eye and the Arm; A Girl Named Disaster; and The House of the Scorpion. Nancy Farmer never intended to be a writer. She says “I wanted to be an explorer… to go out and have adventures and have fun.” She has spent three years in the Peace Corps in southern India. Eventually she wanted to do something interesting, so she bought a ticket on a freighter to Africa. She ended up 20 years in Africa.
The main character of A Girl Named Disaster is Nhamo. She was a young girl living in Mozambique, Africa. She lived on a poor village with her aunt, her grandmother, and her cousin. When little, her mother was killed by a leopard and her father abandoned her. She does the right thing when she decides to look for her father so she can get his blessing so she could reach her womanhood. I identify with her when she tries to accomplish her dreams because I will do the impossible to accomplish my dreams. Another character of the story is Aunt Chipo. She has hated Nhamo since she was born and forces her to do most of the work in the village. Since she leaves Nhamo all the work, she allows her daughter Masvita to do the easy tasks. Aunt Shuvai is Nhamo’s younger aunt. She has mixed feelings towards Nhamo.
A Girl Named Disaster took place in Mozambique and Zimbabwe in Africa in the year 1981. Since this story was taken place in Africa, it makes the story exciting because you imagine the life of them in Africa and whenever they are in danger you feel the suspense in the story. The setting has an important effect on all the characters since it was the time that technology haven’t reached those areas in Africa. And this story did increased my knowledge since it explained to me the life in 1980’s in Africa and how people lived.
In this story, the author is trying to say that you should accomplish your dreams. To ignore all negative thoughts that will hold you down and not help you toward your dreams. This story is about the courage of a little girl whose life had been a disaster. I learned from this book about the life of an African girl whose mother died and her father left her when she was little and when she’s a teen she goes to look for her father so she can get her father’s blessing for her womanhood. One problem that happened in the story was that Nhamo wanted to become a woman and needed her father’s blessing, which was solved by going to look for her father. But instead, she realizes in the trip that she already had her womanhood.
In this story happened a lot of events. At first, Nhamo’s mother died when she was little and her father left her. Then, Masvita enters her womanhood when
