“Tuesdays with Morrie”
Book Report:
This book tells the story of an old teacher and his terminal disease, but most important it talks about his point of view of life and dead.
Mitch Albom narrates us his own experience with his University professor Morrie Scwartz.
It all begins at the University graduation of Mitch, here he says goodbye to his loving professor Morrie, and he promised to keep in touch.
Now 16 years had passed since Mitch saw Morrie. Mitch is on the journalist business and he’s very ambitious, he tries to live his life as if he had no time to waste. One day when he’s watching the TV, he sees by casualty that his old teacher Morrie is on it, talking about his terminal disease ALS. Mitch can not believe what he’s hearing, and he decides to visit Morrie since it has been a very long time since he last saw him.
When Mitch arrives at Morrie’s house, and he sees him he can’t believe how much he has changed. Morrie is very happy to see him, and as they did in the past they begin to talk about many things.
Following their first Tuesday together, Mitch returns regularly every Tuesday to listen to Morrie's lessons on "The Meaning of Life." Each week, Mitch brings Morrie food to eat, though as Morrie's condition worsens he is no longer able to enjoy solid food.
As the Tuesdays pass the two of them begin a very strong relationship, and also Morrie’s disease worsens (first he can’t move his legs, then little by little he stops doing the daily things: he can’t go to the bathroom alone, he can’t eat solid things, he needs oxygen to help him breathe, he begins to cough). Interspersed throughout Mitch's visits to Morrie are flashbacks to their days together at Brandeis.
In his lessons, Morrie advises Mitch to reject the popular culture in favor of creating his own. The individualistic culture Morrie encourages Mitch to create for himself is a culture founded on love, acceptance, and human goodness. Mitch cares a lot about Morrie, and the lessons with him changes his perspective of life. Mitch tape records his discussions with Morrie so that he may have them after Morrie’s death, and so he could write his project a project which he and Morrie refer to as their "last thesis together." Morrie continually tells Mitch that he wants to share his stories with the world, and the book will allow him to do just that.
After all the lessons they had together they develop a special bond, they love each other a lot, but sadly there’s not much time left for Morrie.
On their last lesson Morrie was very weak (so weak that he was in bed unable to do anything), they finally said goodbye to each other. Two days after that Morrie falls into a coma and finally dies in peace as he wanted.
The relationship between Mitch and Morrie was very strong and special.
Since the beginning of the book they share a relationship in university. With their reunion after sixteen years of not seeing each other they re-form their relationship and on each lesson the trust on each other grows. They talk about their personal lives, their families and their childhood, but most important Morrie teaches Mitch the meaning of life, and changes completely his way of thinking.
