What is a Robot?

Robots are physical agents that perform tasks by manipulating the physical world. They are equipped with

sensors to perceive their environment and effectors to assert physical forces on it

. As mentioned before Robots can be put into three main categories: manipulators, mobile

robots and humanoid robots.

¿Qué es un robot?

Los robots son agentes físicos que realizan tareas manipulando el mundo físico. Ellos están equipados con

sensores para percibir su entorno y efectores para afirmar las fuerzas físicas en él

. Como se mencionó antes, los robots se pueden clasificar en tres categorías principales: manipuladores, dispositivos móviles

robots y robots humanoides.

2. Robotics and AI

Artificial intelligence is a theory. The base object is the agent who is the "actor". It is realized in software.

Robots are manufactured as hardware. The connection between those two is that the control of the robot is

a software agent that reads data from the sensors, decides what to do next and then directs the effectors to

act in the physical world.

Los robots se fabrican como hardware. La conexión entre esos dos es que el control del robot es

un agente de software que lee datos de los sensores, decide qué hacer a continuación y luego dirige los efectores a

Who develops this technology?

There are public institutions that are allocating large sums of money to R & D, but the private sector is the one that is putting more effort in this task. There are already several companies at a global level that are betting strongly in this sector as iRobot, Raven Industries, Intuitive Surgical, Rockwell Automotion or the very Siemens. There are even Spanish companies that offer logistics solutions to such important customers as Peugeot, GlaxoSmithKline or Campofrío. According to the International Federation of Robotics, the installation of industrial robots grew in Spain by 63% during the last year. Another study says that in Spain there are 150 robots per 10,000 employees, compared to 127 in France or 301 in Germany.

¿Quién desarrolla esta tecnología?

Hay instituciones públicas que están asignando grandes sumas de dinero a I + D, pero el sector privado es el que está poniendo más esfuerzo en esta tarea. Ya hay varias compañías a nivel mundial que están apostando fuertemente en este sector como iRobot, Raven Industries, Intuitive Surgical, Rockwell Automotion o la misma Siemens. Incluso hay empresas españolas que ofrecen soluciones logísticas a clientes tan importantes como Peugeot, GlaxoSmithKline o Campofrío. Según la Federación Internacional de Robótica, la instalación de robots industriales creció en España en un 63% durante el último año. Otro estudio dice que en España hay 150 robots por cada 10.000 empleados, en comparación con 127 en Francia o 301 en Alemania.
