Is the censorship valid in the children’s literature?

The term censorship implies a negative connotation because violates one the inherent rights of man: the right to free expression, the right to choose, the right to autonomy.

Censorship is applied for ideological reasons, moral or political. According to the RAE:“In a broad sense suppression is considered as communication materials that can be considered offensive, harmful or inconvenient to the government the media as determined by censor”.

According to this definition it seems unlikely that it can be applied to children’ literature, however there are many examples that prove otherwise and that if is applied the censorship validated for the excessive desire to protect children’s mind of the amoral topic that could distort their minds, sensitive topics such as death, sex, child abuse, among others.

Therefore mediators should be clear that censorship differs diametrically from the selection of works, that is the act of choosing from a wide variety, those books that based in the objective criteria: pedagogical, the different topics, by the awards received, by author, among others, we will select us to build a canon, it is true that leave out some and will prefer us others but the option is justified by applying the above criteria that will allow a thorough analysis.

Censorship is ban, but will be worth censoring at a time when the network provides unlimited access? Says about Cassany (2012) “The structure interconnected and open Internet breaks any kind of censorship and control and facilities the dissemination of views of each”.

In conclusion, I think that censorship is not valid; children can read about any topic at tending obviously according to their interests, age and psychological development, because there isn’t a real reason for it.
