REFLECTION WORKSHEET.  Context.

  1. Description.  According to the observation of the institution you are assigned, write a description including the answer of the following questions and include other details you consider important.
  1. General context
  1. How do you describe the context where the institution is located?

Is not a heavy context, however we could see many destitute people that could affect (no too much) the little kids and the teenagers, but in general terms the institution is located in a good place as I mention before not too heavy, but it’s important to take care in some of the cases.

  1. What are the socio-economic characteristics?

About the socio-economic characteristics around the school, we can observe that we have a lot of wealthy people walking around the school, also we have a lot of restaurants many of these are expensive, some others are cheaper, we can see a mall and the Javeriana University that is close to the school and this affect the socio-economic characteristics of the place.

  1. What kind of people live around?

As I mention before, the most frequent people that we can see is wealthy people or students of the Javeriana University also of the Distrital University and people who works close to the school.

  1. Is that a commercial zone? Why?

Yes, it is a commercial zone, because we can find a mall, a lot of restaurants and this is also because of this is close to the National Park and located in the downtown of the city.

  1. What’s the access like? Is that a convenient institution location?

It is a convenient location because is close to many places, they (or we) have many facilities, but the access could be a little bit dangerous because also is close to a big highway and we must take care to cross it.

  1. What is the architecture of the houses around?

Many of the buildings are colonial architecture (to the north from the school) but most of the buildings were changing through the time and it’s are big edifices and the mall.

  1. Is that a populated, overpopulated or isolated neighborhood?

This is an overpopulated neighborhood because many people pass for this place and people of all the city, not just from this neighborhood.

  1. The institution itself
  1. How do you describe the institution setting?

It is an organizing institution setting although they don’t have an English teacher for primary school, and I like that they divide the SENA’s students from school’s students

  1. What is the institution like? (architecture)

The architecture of the institution is a little old and all its windows have bars (like a jail)

  1.  Is the institution size appropriate according to the number of the students?

I think that the institution is enough for the number of students (including SENA students) and has a good organization between the students.

  1. Reflection.

Before reading the chapter “defining the context” by Graves, think about the answer to the following questions.

  1. How do you define context?

The context is composed by all the set of features that characterize and give a unique status and let us describe a community, place, country, institution, neighborhood, cult, party, etc.

  1. What aspects of the context are necessary to understand it?

The aspects to take into account to define the context of a determined place or group of people are: culture, education level, background, ways of living, ways of solve conflicts, ways to make or create things, ways to behave, ways to evolve in the society, beliefs, customs, festivities, and others. All of these could be very useful in order to set another kind of data of a specific community such as: needs, weaknesses, lacks, and stablish a means to improve and enhance certain aspect of the culture.
