PERSONAL VALUES AND DECISION MAKING ESSAY

“Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value.” These are Albert Einstein’s words which makes us think and analyze about what are the things that human is always worrying about, or what are the things we are giving priority to? What are we looking for in our lives and what are we doing to achieve those goals?

In his quote, Einstein is not minimizing the fact that becoming successful is not important, instead, he claims that having and creating our values is a higher priority. This is the reason why we, as solid persons, need to focus on identifying our core values and work on them in order to a better decision making in our lives when faced with an ethical dilemma or over any situation.

First of all, how would you define your values?

Values are those meaningful and enduring beliefs or ideals that each person has about what is good or bad, convenient or inconvenient, and needed or not required. Values have a lot of influence on someone’s conduct and attitude, and it helps us in the process of making decisions in our life, they are core convictions, which guide us on the manner we use to handle our own life in a meaningful and pleasant way for ourselves.

With values you are able to measure your choices and your actions, whether you are conscious or not. You use them to think through your behavior and how is it going to affect yourself and others.

And also with those personal values, you can determine the level of satisfaction you have with the choices you made, even if you did not were free to choose but other factors had to intervene.

We all have a personal ethical code, which helps us determine our core values. This code Is exclusive to you and everything you do in your life, your actions, you attitude and your decisions is dictated by your core values. Therefore it is essential for you to figure them out and stick to them throughout your life.

After analyzing my own mindset over things, I have been encountered with some core values that I can say they are My Core Values. Doing the last week’s homework exercise assisted me a lot in identifying which are the values that best suits me bases on my attitude and decision making process.

What I did in order to identify my personal core values was writing all of the core values that came in the exercise’s list in a piece of paper adding the ones I believed were important as well. Then I started analyzing one by one; comparing them and eliminating the ones I thought were less important or meaningful to me, until I found myself with those two values, which I consider the most important.

At the end, I came up with two values: Determination and Happiness. Perhaps you may be asking to yourself why those two core values are so important to me?

Well, the reason I chose only those two core values is because I believe happiness is such an important value for you to grow as a person. Being happy does not only mean enjoying life more, it actually has a big impact in how you develop yourself in your personal and professional life as well as feeling healthier physically and emotionally.

And determination helps you move forward so you can achieve the goals and objectives you set in your life, which leads to happiness. That is why I believe these two values complement each other and having them together in our lives, will give us a positive and successful feeling. But of course those are not the only ones that are in my personal set of values or that I consider important to me.

Another values that I believe are so important to me are: honesty,
