Inter-organizational IS:
Company boundaries: three different models to represent interactions between different organizations:
- Value system, you can have value system of the providers, customers..; this interface is quite big and we are going to go in the specific
- Supply chain it is traditional, here you have physical industrial plants, they are geographically industrial plants where raw material and end products are acquired, transformed, stocked and sold. There are communication lines linking these plants and transporting products then you have information flows, associated to products along the supply chain or travelling in the opposite direction (requirements, orders and acknowledgements).

Entity – relationship approach, Similarity can be assessed at different levels of description and regarding info structures and processes.

Organizations don’t change because :
- Inertia and legacy: legacy is about sharing information.

- Equipment
- Specialized personnel
- Limited information
- Established POV of decision Makers
- Historical Organizational Success
- Difficulty in changing organisational culture
Districts and information flows
The importance of data exchanged (timeliness, accuracy, completeness, consistency)
The reliability of interfaces to get access and exchange information,
The meaningfulness of data (standard and common vocabularies (semantics); interoperability btw workflows (pragmatics).
This requires a sociotechnical approach: from the technical side the adoption of communication standards (e.g. the web, over HTTp, TCP, IP), from the social side the participatory and co-evolutive definition of a common language (value background) and the commitment of top and middle management in taking care of data and nurturing a culture of knowledge and information sharing (transparency).

How to model a business process? It can be done in order to automate it,
The importance of the quality data exchanged between different companies (timeliness, accuracy, completeness, consistency).
The reliability of interfaces to get access and exchange information
The data has to be established in terms of meaning but not only, it can be established I terms of interoperability between workflows.
Workflows means management workflows system which aim is to automate this flows.
Collaboration at the pragmatic point of view, it is needed a match between the flows, which cannot be perfect
