Introduction
The 1990 (MCMXC) was a common year that started on a Monday. In the Gregorian calendar, it was the 1990th year of Anno Domini; the 990th year of the 2nd millennium; the 90th year of the 20th century; and the 1st year of the 1990s. This year was known as “The International Literacy Year” by the United Nations Organization (ONU). Important events include the close to the public of La Torre de Pisa in Italy, “Dance with Wolves” won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Felix “Tito” Trinidad stars his career as professional boxing. In the fashion the neon color was used to wear and jean in darker color began to emerge.
During the 1990 the movie “Dance with Wolves” won the Best Picture on Academy Award and Golden Globe Award. With this Movie Kevin Costner won the Best Director on both awards. Another movie that impact the year was Pretty Woman; this movie was starring for Julia Robert and Richard Gere. In Puerto Rico, the movie “Lo que le Paso a Santiago” by Jacobo Morales was nominated for the Oscar as Best Foreing Language Film. This movie was starring for Tommy Muñiz and Gladys Rodriguez. The movie tells the story of a recently retired widower who meets a mysterious young lady in his life, disrupting his daily routines. The most popular American TV shows were “Blossom”, “Friends”, “Rodeo Drive” and “The Brady’s”. This year, also many programs end as “ALF”, “The Smurf”, “Duck Tale” and “The Adventures of Super Mario”. In Puerto Rico, the most popular TV shows were “El Cuarter de la Risa”, “Maripili”, “No Te Duermas” and “La Isla”. One of the artists that debuted in 1990; was Shakira, with her Album “Pies Descalzos”. Shakira is considered one of the most important artists of his generation, given the impact his music has meant. Marieh Cary stars her career in London; she was one of the most important figures of black music during the '90s, and that, along with other artists caused a revolution in the black pop. In Puerto Rico this year emerged the rhythm of reggeaton that fuses reggae, rap and traditional Caribbean music.
The colors that were used in fashion of the 1990 were neon color. Women wore denim button down shirts, neon colors, oversized sweaters, T-shirts, sweatshirts, baby doll dresses, and trench coats lined with fake fur, and black leather jackets. Matching jeans and denim jackets began to be made in darker shades. From 1990 onwards, many women wore tight-fitting trousers with elastic boot-straps (stirrup pants/leggings), drainpipe jeans, colored tights, bike shorts, and tartan skirts. Popular accessories included court shoes, cowboy boots, headscarves, leggings, and penny loafers. Leotards worn as tops with jeans were popular. A common outfit was to wear a skirt, dress shorts, baby doll dress or short dress with black opaque tights, white slouch socksand white sneakers. It was not uncommon to see mothers dressed right along with their daughters in white slouch socks worn over black leggings or sweatpants, oversized T-shirt or sweater, and athletic sneakers like Keds or Converse.
In the America Football, the Champion in the Super Bowl was San Francisco that won 55-10 over the Broncos of Denver. Derrick Thomas has 7 sacks for Kansas City Chiefs against Seattle Seahawks. The Colorado Buffaloes are named the AP Poll champion. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are named the UPI Poll. In the baseball the Cincinnati Reds sweep the Oakland A's in the World Series. Felix “Tito” Trinidad stars his career as professional boxing. Orlando Fernadez obtained the Tittle of Super bantamweigh. Buster Douglas defeated Mike Tyson by a knockout in round 10 to win the world's unified Heavyweight title, in what many consider boxing's biggest upset ever. Thunder Meets Lightning: Julio César Chávez defeated Meldrick Taylor to unify boxing's world junior welterweight title. In National Superiol Basketball the serie was won by “Los Leones” from Ponce over the Mets of Guaynabo. The NBA Finals was won for Detroit Piston.
For 1990 the government of Puerto Rico was Rafael Hernández Colón, Puerto Rican politician who served as the fourth Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico for three terms, from 1973 to 1977 and from 1985 to 1993. An experienced politician, Hernández holds the record for being the youngest Governor of Puerto Rico, having won his first term at the age of 36. Hernández is also the person who has run for Governor the most times, a total of five. During his terms as Governor, Hernández Colón's administration was known for trying to invigorate the Puerto Rican economy as well as defending the current political status of the island. The United Stated president was George Herbert Walker Bush. He is an American politician who served as the 41st President of the United States (1989–93). A Republican, he had previously served as the 43rd Vice President of the United States (1981–89), a congressman, an ambassador, a Director of Central Intelligence, and is currently the oldest surviving president.
Important event that occur during this year was Hurricane Diana. It was the deadliest tropical cyclone during the 1990 Atlantic hurricane season, killing 139 people in Mexico. Forming out of a tropical wave on August 4, the system brushed Honduras before intensifying into a tropical storm the following day. Gradually gaining strength, Diana struck the Yucatán Peninsula with winds of 65 mph (100 km/h). Another historical event was the close to the public of the “La Torres de Pisa” was closed to the public. The bells were removed to relieve some weight, and cables were cinched around the third level and anchored several hundred meters away. Apartments and houses in the path of the tower were vacated for safety.
