The Generation Gap Between my Great-grandfather and Me
Generations have passed; economy has become better; people have changed, and technology has evolved. In 1939, people were strict and poor; now in the 21st century, people are becoming rebellious, becoming more and more adapt to technology, and becoming lazy. This generation is becoming lazier because things are easier to find like information about authors, places and news. There are 3 thing that in both generation that have most difference than similitude’s. Those are the education, family and entertainment. People are more open-minded than before. People now can’t live without something called the “Internet”, this generation believe that without this “Internet”, their lives are ruined. All children’s games are now digital and not physically oriented.
My great-grandfather and I had different ways in which we obtained our education. We obtained our education in Ponce, but my great-grandfather studied at Ponce High, and I studied at Dr. Manuel de la Pila Iglesias. My education in high school was based on studying marketing, where I learned how to be a successful person in customer services, advertising and promoting special events, and especially how in tourism. My great-grandfather’s education was based on studying typing and shorthand that is a system that provides symbols or abbreviations for words and common phrases, which can allow someone well trained in the system to write as quickly as people speak. His classes were only in the morning, but my classes were almost the whole day. My great-grandfather’s favorite class was Math, and my favorite class was English. When a teacher gave homework, he was obligatory to walk to the Ponce Library to do the given assignment because in those times there was no internet, so he did his assignment by reading several books or asking someone about it. When the teacher assigns me homework, I do it in my laptop at my house, the computers at school, several encyclopedia; even in this day, just a few people use books to do assignments. Because in 1939, there was no transportation, my great-grandfather walked to school, I can take a bus to school or a family or a friend can take me to school. I liked to eat at the lunchroom of the school, but my great-grandfather liked to eat lunch at home. He never got the opportunity to go to college because there was not enough money to pay it, but fortunately, I have the opportunity to experience college life. My great-grandfather’s graduating from high school was a big deal because that diploma was like having a big prestige. A lot of people drop school from 6 grade to 9 grade. But now by only having the a high school diploma it is not easy to find a good job because of the economy. Now everybody needs more than just a simple diploma they need other preparation in college or institute. I notice that it was really difficult to have the proper education because most of the people were really poor.
My great-grandfather and I have peculiar families. My great-grandfather family is a poor class because in those times there’s not enough money. My family is middle class, but this does not mean is in great shape in the economy because the economy is increasing every year. My great-grandfather has 4 siblings. Their names are Carlos, Carmen, Wilson and Julio. My great-grandfather is the second oldest brother in the family. I have only 2 siblings. Their names are Nicole and Jeremy. I’m the oldest sibling in the family. My great-grandfather and I had great communication with our siblings. We always share things and mostly we play any game that involves non-violence. Another thing that my great-grandfather and I have in common is that our parents are demanding and tough with rules, but still we had communication with our beloved parents. At dinner my great-grandfather was obligatory to eat at his house at the table with his family, and the only thing that they can do at the table in addition to eating was having long conversation about school, chores, or even what they do in the day; but in my situation the family is really different from those days. We can sit whatever we want and also eat while watching TV or playing videogames. What I like about family of my great-grandfather’s family is that they pray
