     About the Context

1-What is a totalitarian regime? How does such a regime attain, maintain, and increase power?

A totalitarian regime is a routine run by a dictator. However, in the world of 1984, the people don’t know that they are being wrongly guided by their dictator but also they believe that their dictator is a hero or a savior. Big Brother controls everything the citizens do.

2-What role does technology play in this book?

Technology plays a very important role in this book. Everyone is being watched at every time. The party from Big Brother employs this technology to keep the people from the city enslaved. Also they put microphones everywhere so they can control the citizens in every aspect.

3-So someone somewhere said that one who controls the past also controls the present, and therefore, the future. True or not so True?

I believe that this statement is true. Whatever we do affects or future. The future is just a mirror from the decisions you’ve made on the past.

4-Take a look at the three Ingsoc matras: war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength. Does 1984 make a successful argument for ignorance being the same as weakness?

The party knew that if they kept the people with ignorance they would have more power. They knew that as long as the masses trust the them, they would rule forever without any exception.

5-What is the central/primary purpose of the story? Is this purpose important or meaningful?

The main purpose of the story is to advice people about the dangers of a totalitarian government or Communism but also to show how can technology can be used as a weapon.  I believe this is a very important purpose to show people how where the governments at that times.

6-How can you compare the world of 1984 and the current world?  This book shows a type of technology that we have Nowadays. It is easy to compare cell phones with telescreens as both can be used to communicate but also both can be used as government surveillance.

Another point is war. Although 1984 was not a big war as Nowadays. The Author believed that the world will be in a constant war. Even though many countries are not in “Wars” sooner or later the people will fight for their rights no matter what type of government they have.

7-Why is 1984 controversial? Why has it been banned?

The book was banned for sexual content between characters but also because the book alleged Pro-Communist themes that weren’t accepted. The book is also accused for Anti-Semitism as it describes Goldstein as “Jewish”. Not to mention that the book is and has been one of the most frequently challenged novels of modern times.

8-How is USA, China, or North Korea like 1984?

USA: I can’t find USA alike with 1984 because all the North American citizens have the rights that in 1984 people don’t have.

China: Although in China you have expression freedom, Chinese inhabitants are subject to heavy government involvement in their decisions.

North Korea is the most similar to 1984. They have a crazy leader that is the only who takes the decisions, he has a total control of the Koreans, and if someone thinks different, he order them to be killed. Not to mention that the citizens are always under surveillance.

9-What is the main idea in the Apple 1984 Super Bowl Commercial released in the XVII in 1984?
